The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital campus sits on 13.3 acres at 170 Morton Street, deep within Frederick Law Olmsted's Franklin Park โ Boston's largest park and the crown jewel of the Emerald Necklace.
In 1949, the City of Boston conveyed this parkland โ then a scenic meadow called Heathfield โ to the Commonwealth specifically for public health purposes. The hospital, built in the early 1950s, has served the region for over 70 years, providing care for respiratory illness, cancer, HIV, psychiatric services, corrections inmates, and substance use disorder (SUD) treatment. Today, several nonprofits operate on the campus, including a men's shelter and structured, supervised addiction recovery and treatment programs.
The aging building cannot be cost-effectively renovated. Hospital services are relocating to Boston Medical Center's South End campus. This creates a rare decision point: the State holds the site under a deed restriction requiring health use โ or it can be returned to the City for parkland. Community input is a vital part of the public process and could help inform the vision for what comes next.
